Comparison of Mini consoles: Playstation, Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo Nes and Super Nes
In this article I present to you my comparison of Mini consoles! Unfortunately they are not all equal, don't hesitate to give me your opinion!
It must be said, in recent years, Nintendo has literally launched the trend for mini consoles! Faced with this insolent commercial success (we are talking about several million consoles sold) Sony tried its luck with its Playstation Classic and Sega took matters into its own hands to offer its version of the Mega Drive Mini. Here is my comparative file!
The design of the consoles
Whether it's the Nintendo Classic Mini, Super Nintendo Classic Mini, Playstation Classic and Sega Mega Drive, they are all 55% smaller than the original consoles. In addition to being miniaturized, they all have the look of the real consoles of yesteryear. Sony Nintendo and Sega have worked hard to offer beautiful replicas of their old consoles. In my opinion, the most successful in terms of design is the Playstation Classic although I hesitate with the Sega Mega Drive Mini from Sega which is also very cute
The controllers
For me it's the Super Nintendo Classic Mini which has the best controller! Faithfully repeating the look of the Super Nes pad, it has a sufficiently long cable and excellent grip. Red card on the other hand for the length of the controller cable of the Nintendo Classic Mini, only 75 cm it’s nonsense. Regarding the controllers for the Playstation Classic and Mega Drive Mini, they are satisfactory even if I would have preferred the Dualshock 1 (with joysticks) for the Playstation 1 and the 6-button Pad for the Sega Mega Drive.
The interface
Nintendo wins hands down with a top interface, both for the Nes Mini and the Super Nintendo Classic Mini. It’s fluid, simple, we enjoy launching a game and using all the features of the console (instant save, quick return...). Sega is not far behind. The Sega Mega Drive interface is fun, well thought out and the music in the menus is great, all evoking the cult sounds of Street Of Rage. Concerning the Playstation Classic, Sony really didn't bother, it's the bare minimum and it's really shaky :/
Emulation
Nintendo and Sega are on par. Emulation is very good on the Nintendo Classic Mini, Super Nintendo Classic Mini and Sega Mega Drive Mini. If I have to give a winner on emulation I would name Sega. By entrusting the emulation of their console to the talented M2 development studio, they ensured the best for the Sega Mega Drive Mini. Red card on the other hand for Sony. They did some tinkering on the Playstation Classic… It’s far from being at the top, it’s sloppy work… To be frank, an open source emulator does better than the emulator they integrated into the console :/
The game catalog
There is no doubt, the Sega Mega Drive wins. In the catalog of its mini console, Sega offered rare games and sometimes sold at exorbitant prices on auction sites. Obviously we will always be missing certain games from our childhood like Aladdin or the Lion King but my little finger tells me that we will soon be able to add more :p. Nintendo also offered a very good catalog on its Nintendo Classic Mini and Super Nintendo Classic Mini, the cult games of our youth are available on these machines :) . We end with the bad student, the Playstation Classic… How can I put it, there are cult games missing on the mini console :/ How can we forgive the absence of Wipeout, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot and Gran Turismo? Seriously? It's as if Nintendo hadn't offered Mario and Sega had skipped Sonic, it's nonsense...
My verdict
For me the best mini console is theSega Mega Drive Mini. It offers the best game catalog, the emulation is top notch, it's flawless, Sega is once again stronger than you. Nintendo is also doing very well with its Nes and Super Nintendo Mini, as usual the mustachioed plumber's firm offers neat consoles with a very good catalog and perfect emulation. It's a shame, however, that thePlayStation Classicis also perfectible. Sony had a way of offering something grandiose, unfortunately this is not the case 🙁
