My opinion on the Shenmue 3 demo

Finally! I finally got my hands on the playable demo of Shenmue III on PC! Here is my verdict!

Can you imagine? I've been waiting for almost 20 years for the continuation of the adventures of this brave Ryo Hazuki, and in November we will finally be able to play episode 3 of the Shenmue saga! It was therefore with great impatience that I awaited this playable demo of Shenmue III, especially since I financed the Shenmue 3 kickstarter project in an unreasonable manner! Like John Hammond in Jurassic Park, I spent lavishly! Was my investment worth it?

Let The Saga begin!

Once the demo was installed on my PC I almost shed a little tear when hearing the first musical notes of the playable demo of Shenmue 3! I felt like I was going back to my teenage years when I discovered the Shenmue saga for the first time on my brand new Sega Dreamcast :) . Pad in hand, I immediately found the gameplay of the time, as if I had never left this game. Of course with the Xbox One pad, the gameplay is still more modern in terms of cameras, particularly with the use of the two joysticks, and we're not going to lie Ryo moves much better than before, he must have lost his broom in the … ^^

Before continuing this test, I want to give my rant a shout-out. In recent months, the video game press has persistently downgraded the graphics of this Shenmue 3. They indicated that this game as it stands would be catastrophic graphically, that the characters were devoid of animation, and I quote that Ryo was cadaverous. Let me be very clear, I played the Shenmue 3 demo on my PC. So for a game financed on kickstarter which never had the pretension of being a triple AAA it is doing more than well. Graphically it's in line with the standards of quite a few games. It's not a graphic slap like in the days of Shenmue 1 that's for sure, but it's clean. The game's landscapes are beautiful, the settings are varied and detailed, the NPC animations correspond to the code of the Shenmue saga, and the game runs smoothly on my PC. I noticed some clipping on the trees in the distance, but frankly I find that Shenmue 3 has a certain graphic charm. It’s lively, it’s colorful, warm but above all it’s Shenmue and that’s what I wanted!  So yes graphically Shenmue 3 will not be the most beautiful game of the generation that's for sure, but it's doing very well for a game financed on Kickstarter.

Phew, this little rant is good but let's get back to this demo of Shenmue 3 ^^ The main objective of this playable demo of Shenmue 3 is to help Ryo find an individual with a scar on his face. As the saga dictates, it is therefore necessary to question the population to obtain valuable advice and clues. In less than ten minutes I succeeded in this quest which ended with a fight with the man with the scar. In terms of the fights, I noticed that they are much more nervous and fluid than in previous episodes. I remembered a few touches and holds and I managed to do them without any problem with the Xbox One pad! After having completed the playable demo for the first time, I restarted a new game in order to delve deep into this little demo of Shenmue 3, I had the opportunity to play lucky hit (hello Shenmue 2), I trained in a temple dedicated to martial arts, I talked with the NPCs, I bought “capsule toys” :p, I took part in turtle races and I even picked flowers ^^, well that reminds me of The Witcher 3... I'm almost sure that I missed a lot of details in this playable demo of Shenmue 3, because knowing Yu Suzuki there are always surprises in these games :)

My verdict!

This playable demo of Shenmue 3 on PC is reassuring! The gameplay has been modernized while respecting that of the saga, the atmosphere of Shenmue is indeed present, and graphically even if it is indeed not grandiose as in the first Shenmue, visually Shenmue 3 is not scary, far from it! We are light years away from the alarmist articles in the video game press. Graphically Shenmue 3 does the job, and I dare say some of the settings and landscapes are beautiful and make you want to travel :) I have confidence in Yu Suzuki to offer us a Shenmue 3 which will be in the same caliber as Shenmue 1 and 2! What is certain is that I can't wait to play the final game in November 2019!
