My review of Google Stadia on PC!

In this new article, I thought why not try the 02-month free offer for Stadia Pro, so here is my test of Google Stadia on PC!

When it was announced, Google Stadia seemed really promising to me! Google announced the video game straight away, without downloading, without installation, without any updates, available from any screen (PC, Laptop, Tablet, Smartphone, TV). How does it work? The games are available from remote servers, so the video games work in full streaming! No need for a computer tower or video game console, Google Stadia is 100% cloud gaming. This Cloud Gaming service offers 720P in gaming mode for small connections (10 megas) and up to 4K 60 fps resolution with a fiber optic connection.

Onward to the test

For this Google Stadia test, I used my Red SFR fiber optic internet connection, a Surface Pro 4 via Wifi, a desktop PC connected via Ethernet to the box and an Xbox One pad connected via USB. I was pleasantly surprised by the simplicity of registering for this Google Stadia service. It's not complicated, you launch Google Chrome, enter your Gmail account, select a nickname and an avatar, and Google Stadia launches. I unlocked my nine free games (including Grid and Destiny 2).

Just to see what this Google Stadia service has in store, I launched Grid on my Surface Pro 4. I admit it's really cool to be in the Stadia interface and have these games available directly. There's no need to wonder if the game is properly installed, if it has all the updates, if you have enough disk space and a solid gaming graphics configuration. Let's start the game, that's all. To test this Cloud Gaming service, I launched Grid, a fairly nervous car racing game.  Well, I'm not going to beat around the bush, over Wifi and despite my fiber optic connection, on my Surface Pro 4 the gaming experience is frankly not smooth… It often slows down, it's not really playable. To improve the experience you will probably have to invest in expensive wifi amplifiers because it is true that the wifi in internet boxes is crap... UPDATE: Well, I consulted the Google help section, they recommend 5GHz WiFi, I switched my box to 5Ghz WiFi and it’s still much better than with classic WiFi! It's much smoother but it's not yet at the top.

On my desktop PC connected via Ethernet, it is fortunately much more conclusive. Grid works correctly and the gaming experience is very close to a classic gaming PC and a video game console connected to a television.  You'll notice my comment 'very close'. I noticed slight slowdowns sometimes, and a very small delay between the action on the pad button and the action in the game. But hey, it's playable, and for once, Google Stadia keeps its promises, provided of course that the PC box (or Chromecast Ultra) is connected via Ethernet. Clearly forget the 2.4ghz wifi of the Internet box, Google Stadia will be disgusting on it even with optical fiber. Cable required or stable 5ghz wifi.

Concerning the game catalog, I'm not going to beat around the bush, it's rather empty… Very (too many) games are currently missing. In addition, many games are offered (unfortunately) at a high price 🙁. We are far from steam sales with games at 8/15€… In short, there's work on the catalog and the prices, we're not going to lie.

Other possibilities of Google Stadia

With a Chromecast Ultra and its Google pad (€70/80) connected to a 4K television, connected via Ethernet to the Internet box (forget wifi), you will have a home console offering a video game experience that will offer a maximum of 4K 60 FPS (optical fiber). The Google Pad has a mount for connecting your Google Pixel 3 or 4 Android smartphone. It is then possible to play your games from the smartphone screen. Google promises many social interactions between YouTube and Stadia in the future, ideal for budding streamers. Unfortunately for the moment these are promises.

My verdict on Google Stadia!

The Google Stadia cloud gaming service works very well as long as you have an optical fiber connection but above all an Ethernet cable or very solid 5ghz wifi (still favor RJ45…). It's amazing to be able to play from any screen and directly, without going through the installation, download, update and configuration box. On the other hand, for the moment the game catalog is poor, but above all the price of the games is worrying. Paying full price (€60) for a game that has been around for many months (or even years) is not cool. Likewise, to have Stadia Pro you still have to pay €10 per month just for the CLoud Gaming infrastructure. games are not included! Ouch. In short, technically Stadia is impressive but in terms of value for money it's not great!
